Oil Tycoon! beginner guide
Your first hour in Oil Tycoon! decides how fast the rest of the game goes. The plot gives you oil for free — the ground keeps pushing it up — so the only thing that matters early is how quickly you get it onto a conveyor and into a sellable product.
The first ten minutes
- Buy the first dropper and conveyor. The collection pit fills on its own; do not stand there holding a cup longer than you have to.
- Extend the path before you upgrade anything. A longer line means more processing steps, and each step adds value.
- Grab the $10 conveyor segment to link the new stretch back to the sell point.
- Talk to Miguel. He hangs around the shop area and sells the mug for $100 — a bigger container, so fewer trips.
- Buy the purifier once the line backs up. Crude oil sells for less than gas cans; the purifier is the first real pay bump.
What to buy first, in order
| Priority | Purchase | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | First dropper + conveyor | Nothing runs without it |
| 2 | Path extension | More steps = more value per barrel |
| 3 | Purifier ($15 oil → processed goods) | First real price jump |
| 4 | Cup / container upgrade (Miguel, $100) | Fewer manual trips |
| 5 | Upgrader ($250) | Turns gas cans worth $23 into $33 fuel |
| 6 | Well worker | Collects while you build |
Traps to avoid in the first hour
- Do not spend everything on cosmetics. Flood lights and beach chairs do not pay.
- Do not ignore your oil running out. If the ground runs dry on your stretch, extend to a new deposit instead of waiting.
- Do not hire workers before the line is built. A worker with nothing to carry earns nothing; the line first, hands second.
- Do not chase the monument yet. The golden drop monument costs $700,000 and, on the verified playthrough, did nothing mechanical.
When to leave your plot
Once workers keep the line running, go explore. The six secrets, the mine, the fishing spot and the time trial are all outside your base — and four of them are rarer than 25% of players. See all six secrets.
The one-sentence version
Extend the route, upgrade the value, automate the running — in that order, never mixed. Almost every wasted first hour comes from doing them out of sequence: automating a route that does not reach the sell point, or upgrading units that never arrive at the upgrader.
FAQ
What should I buy first in Oil Tycoon!?
Buy the first dropper and conveyor, then extend the path before you upgrade anything. The $10 conveyor segment and talking to Miguel come next, then the purifier once the line backs up.
What should I avoid spending money on in the first hour?
Do not spend everything on cosmetics. Everything cosmetic can wait until your line is automated — money in the first hour should go into extending the route and hiring the first worker.
When should I leave my plot?
Leave once your workers are running the line without you: the well worker and drill worker keep production moving while you go looking for secrets, NPCs and the mine.
